Is my house on fire?

After making sure every door and gate locked, then my wife and I went out in our 4W Drive pick-up . The evening was hot and dry. It was a pleasant change at least in our fully air-conditioned pick-up. We enjoyed our time talking and laughing over the experiences that we shared over the years.
After twenty minutes of driving, my wife suddenly blurted out the nasty ‘news’ that she had forgotten to switch off the stove. She had cooked something and had forgotten about it altogether. When I heard it, the first thing that came to my mind was the burning house.  It really got on my nerves. I had to make a sudden u-turn and head straight back home. It spoiled everything. I was not in a mood to talk anymore.  It was really not a joke to be in that kind of situation. On one hand, I had to drive carefully while on the other, I needed to reach home urgently. It was no good choice. How I wish my pick-up were a fire engine  with the siren on speeding along the highway.  If my heart was weak, I would have had a serious heart attack.
Once reaching home, I quickly got out and opened the gate and door and rushed to the kitchen. I had expected the pot to be cooked instead and turned red hot like the furnace.  On taking a closer look we discovered that the stove had been switched off. What a relief!  There was no fire. My wife had actually switched  the stove off  before we left our house. It was her memory that had tricked her.  It was not the first time that she had put me in that situation. It had happened before and I was  the one to suffer  behind the wheels. I am sure what happened this evening would  not be the last either. Maybe it is going to happen soon. I think I better get ready for any eventuality with the fire-extinguishers placed at the different corners of my house and my pick-up as well.
